ST. CHARLES, MO. (KTVI) – A YouTube video of two arrests in St. Charles is causing a controversy over the right to protest and public safety.
On Saturday protesters took to overpasses all over the country, calling for the impeachment of President Obama. The demonstration in St. Charles seems to be getting a lot of attention because of the YouTube video shot by one of the protesters. Missouri Highway Patrol troopers approached the protesters on the Fairgrounds Road overpass over Interstate 70 just west of the 5th Street exit.
The trooper said the said their actions were distracting to traffic and there had been five minor accidents on I-70 in the area while they were there.
The highway patrol says Marc Messmer of St. Charles and Jimmy Weed of Bridgeton were charged with failing to obey. Messmer is also charged with resisting arrest. A third protester who shot the video was not arrested when they chose to leave the scene.
The highway patrol says several similar overpass protests occurred in Missouri Saturday, but St. Charles location is the only place where arrests were made.
